Qatar hosts Chadian groups for peace negotiations

In another mediation initiative by Qatar to diffuse crisis in restive African country and establish peace, 'Chad Peace Negotiations in Doha' started yesterday with the representation of the Transitional Military Council and rival armed groups.

Dozens of participants representing different Political parties and armed groups from Chad were provided a platform by Qatar to negotiate a peaceful political agreement with the Transitional Military Council.

The Prime Minister of the Transitional government of the Republic of Chad H E Bahimi Badaki Albert addressed the opening session terming peace negotiations in Doha as“historic moment” and a“decisive step” towards political consensus in Chad.

The opening session was attended by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs H E Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Libya H E Najla El Mangoush, Chairperson of the African Union Commission H E Moussa Faki Mahamat, Special Envoy of Qatar's Minister of Foreign Affairs for Combating Terrorism and Mediation in Settlement of Disputes H E Mutlaq bin Majid Al Qahtani.

A number of diplomats including Ambassadors of France, Germany, Italy and some African countries to Qatar as well as representatives of regional, international organisations also attended the opening session.

Lauding Qatar's international efforts for bringing peace in the world, Bahimi Badaki Albert expressed hopes that an agreement will be reached between all Chadian parties that would pave the way for a comprehensive peace process.

“My presence in Doha for negotiations falls within the framework of the Transitional Military Council's commitment for creating an atmosphere of confidence and conditions conducive to national reconciliation in Chad,” he added.

Earlier in his opening remarks, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs said that Qatar, in its capacity as a facilitator, will do everything to make Chad Peace Negotiations a success.“The State of Qatar is a peace loving country and Qatari people are a peace-loving people and Qatar has no doubt that the brothers in Chad are also peace loving therefore Qatar hopes the success of negotiations,” he said.

He hoped that the Chad Peace Negotiations in Doha would succeed in converging the point of views of the Chadian people, reach fruitful consensus, and achieve the aspirations of millions of Chadians.

The Minister of State said that Qatar hosted many successful peace talks and negotiations that contributed to achieving security, stability and regional and international peace.

“Qatar has friendly relations with the Republic of Chad and Qatar hopes that these relations will continue and develop at various levels.”

The Prime Minister of Chad's Transitional Military Council reiterated his government's commitment to provide all guarantees of transparency and credibility to the political process. He renewed his call to all Chadians and all groups, especially the military opposition, to avail the historic opportunity to establish a solid democratic state. He called upon the Chadians to give up arms and fight, shun hatred and show real courage.“Reconciliation is better than any war,” he added. 

He added that the amnesty law benefited many exiles who returned to their country without waiting for the national dialogue, and hundreds of prisoners of war were released, in the framework of the will of openness and an unprecedented reduction of tension in Chad.
