Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) president Essa bin Hilal al-Kuwari has stressed the need for joint Arab action in the water and agriculture sectors. According to a Kahramaa press statement, while representing Qatar in the second meeting of the Joint Arab Ministerial Council for Water and Agriculture, al-Kuwari conveyed the keenness of Qatar to activate means of co-operation between the countries of the Arab region in the water and agricultural sectors. Also, the Kahramaa president stressed the critical importance of these efforts in enhancing water and food security for all member states. The conference was held virtually and attended by ministers concerned with water and agriculture in the Arab member states. It discussed many challenges and important issues related to water security and agriculture in the region, with the participation of the Regional Office for the Near East and North Africa (RNE) of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA).
The meeting also reviewed the recommendations of the high-level Joint Technical Committee for Water and Agriculture on the revised draft of the action plan aimed at activating the plans and procedures that were nominated for the 2019 Cairo Declaration. Basic information about the use of non-conventional water resources for agriculture in the Arab region, such as desalinated sea water and recycled saline water was also discussed.
Al-Kuwari praised the efforts made by the United Nations partner committees and other regional organisations and by the experts of Arab countries participating in the success of the work of the council and activating the mechanisms and strategic plans stipulated in the Cairo Declaration. Al-Kuwari indicated that joint Arab action and co-ordination at the highest levels is the only way towards achieving real breakthroughs and overcoming the challenges before everyone.
The meeting concluded with a speech by the representative of Lebanon and the head of the current session of the Arab Ministerial Council for Water, and by the representative of Mauritania, the head of the current session of the General Assembly of the Arab Organisation for Agricultural Development.
