Taliban capture Mazar-e-Sharif

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ISLAMABAD, Aug 14 (KUNA) -- The Taliban on Saturday captured Mazar-e-Sharif, the fourth largest city of Afghanistan in northern Balkh province.
A lawmaker from the Balkh province, Abas Ebrahimzada in a statement to the media said that the national army surrendered first, which prompted pro-government militias and other forces to lose morale and give up in the face of a Taliban onslaught launched.
He further said that Abdul Rashid Dostum and Ata Mohammad Noor, the commanders of pro-government forces, had fled the province and their whereabouts were unknown.
Earlier on Wednesday, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani had flown to Mazar-e-Sharif to express support to Afghan security forces and meet with several pro-government commanders to gain support.
Moreover, the group also captured all of Logar province just south of Kabul, Mihterlam, the capital of Laghman province, northeast of Kabul, without a fight, said a lawmaker from Logar province Zefon Safi.
Earlier in the day, Ghani vowed not to give up the "achievements" of the 20 years. (pick up previous)
