ISLAMABAD, Aug 3 (KUNA) -- At least three people were killed and seven others received injuries in a powerful car bomb attack followed by gunfire in Afghanistan's capital city Kabul on Tuesday night.
The ongoing attack took place in Kabul near the city's heavily fortified "Green Zone", an area home to government buildings and foreign embassies. The car comb occurred near the residence of acting Defence Minister, Gen. Bismillah Mohammadi followed by sporadic gunfire and hand grenade blasts. Interior Ministry spokesman, Mirwais Stanekzai confirming the attack said that gunmen entered the area after the first explosion. He said that three attackers were killed by security personnel and a clean-up operation was being conducted by police. All roads leading to the minister's house and guesthouse were closed, he added. The Defence Minister was not present in the house at the time of the attack.
An Afghan Health Ministry spokesman, Dastagir Nazari told the media that at least three people were killed and seven others wounded in the attack, adding that clashes were continuing. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack. The attack comes as heavy clashes are underway between government forces and the Taliban in the city of Lashkargah in Helmand province and in the city of Herat in southern and western Afghanistan, respectively.
