Wearable fitness trackers are rapidly gaining popularity. The barometric pressure sensor enables the wearable device to detect changes in the user's altitude, such as going up and downstairs, to calculate the number of calories burned by the user. So far, many air pressure sensors are not liquid-proof, so integrating them into waterproof products has always been a challenge.

To solve this problem, Bosch Sensortec developed the BMP384, which is a rugged barometric pressure sensor that uses a compact package and provides market-leading accuracy.

Precise sensors in a compact gel package, suitable for wearable devices, consumer and industrial applications.
• The rugged package design provides a high level of protection against the intrusion of water and other contaminants.
• The smallest package among similar air pressure sensors, easy to integrate into wearable devices and other portable products.
• Maintain excellent performance, accuracy and reliability during its service life.

The high performance and low power consumption of BMP384 make it an ideal choice for wearable devices, household appliances and industrial applications in harsh environments. The innovative packaging design of this new sensor uses a unique gel designed to prevent the intrusion of water and other liquids and dust and is equipped with the required integrated functions. Now, OEM manufacturers can directly integrate air pressure sensors into products that require high robustness.

"Bosch has applied its years of experience in building reliable sensors for harsh environments to the design of BMP384," said Dr. Stefan Finkbeiner, CEO of Bosch Sensortec. "Until now, engineers have been integrating air pressure sensors into water or other application of pollutants, there are still huge challenges. During the service life of the final product, performance degradation often occurs. This new sensor makes integration easier and can reassure manufacturers and users."

Bosch Pressure Sensor-water resistance

The new BMP384 barometric pressure sensor is very suitable for wearable devices such as smartwatches and fitness trackers, for example, in activities such as swimming and running. The special gel in the package can resist common liquids such as saltwater, rain, sweat, and sunscreen. With a size of only 2.0 x 2.0 x 1mm³, it can be seamlessly integrated even in extremely small devices.

In addition to wearable devices, this sensor can also be used in household appliances, such as the water level detection of washing machines, to ensure accurate water measurement and prevent overflow. At the same time, BMP384 is also very durable, which is ideal for dusty environment use cases such as clogging detection in vacuum cleaners.

BMP384 is not only durable but also uncompromising in performance. Its relative accuracy is +/- 8 Pa, absolute accuracy is +/- 40 Pa, and Temperature Coefficient Offset (TCO) is +/- 1.0 Pa/K. More importantly, the power consumption of the sensor is only 3.2 mA (typical) at a data rate of 1 Hz, which puts a very low load on the battery of a portable device.
