São Paulo - Petrobras has confirmed it's discontinuing vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a sea route connecting the Gulf region to the Indian Ocean. The decision had been published by the investment website of the Valor Econômico newspaper, Valor Investe, this Wednesday (8) morning. Widely use for transporting oil, the strait is just past the Gulf of Oman, and is bounded by Iran on one side and Oman and the United Arab Emirates on the other.
Petrobras' decision comes amid an escalation of tension between the United States and Iran . This Wednesday, the company issued an official press release explaining that it routinely evaluates shipping routes in order to avoid stretches that may put their operations at risk.
'The company considered the scenario and, together with Brazilian Navy, decided to avoid for now trafficking trough the Strait of Hormuz. This change won't cause any impact on fuel supplies in Brazil. The local developments keep being monitored and evaluated,' reads Petrobras communiqué.
