Oman- Squid landing registers growth in 2018: MoAF

Squid landing contributed RO26mn to the fisheries sector last year. According to an official source at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MoAF), squid landing reached 16,154 tonnes in 2018 compared to 9,504 tonnes in 2017. 

Found in large quantities in South Sharqiyah, Al Wusta and Dhofar governorates, the marine creature is found at a depth of 30m to 50m.

The ministry, in cooperation with fishermen, has intensified efforts to prevent over-exploitation of fisheries stocks and preserve marine environment from pollution.

It had also initiated an outreach and media campaign to educate artisanal fishermen on the period of squid fishing season, the type of nets and equipment allowed and steps taken to prevent overfishing. There are seven species of squids in Oman.

Squids are locally known as Al Ghitro and belong to the mollusc family.
