Saudi Arabia opens second border crossing with Kuwait
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) RIYADH, June 26 (KUNA) -- Saudi Arabia has opened its second border crossing with Kuwait in the north west, described as a "strategic and attractive destination" for the transport of goods and travellers.
Al-Riggi crossing, constructed on an area of over 6,000 sq/km, follows the earlier Al-Nuwaiseeb crossing, which borders southern Kuwait.
It will be able to accommodate 12,000 vehicles and 2,000 trucks a day and cost the kingdom around USD 430 million to build, Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province Governor Prince Saud bin Nayef Al-Saud and other officials said on the occasion.
Some 16 buildings for government and private bodies, tasked with running the port, are located on the site along with a residential area and power and water plants.
The new crossing aims to facilitate and keep abreast with the continued increase of travellers and will be crucial to boosting trade and bilateral economic ties, Deputy Governor Majid Al-Mirzim added.
The development precedes many more in the future, including a revamp of existing land border crossings, in line with the country's plans to improve infrastructure and boost its reputation as a global logistics hub, explained the official. (end)
