Iraq denies evacuation of US personnel

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BAGHDAD, June 22 (KUNA) -- Iraq denied on Saturday reported evacuation of American contractors from Balad air base north of the capital.
Spokesman of the Joint Operations Command described in a statement as false the reports about the evacuation of the contractors or personnel from the air base, located in Salah Eddine province.
Iraqi military forces are protecting military bases to ensure safety of the Iraqi troops, American advisers and trainers, he added.
Iraq has recently witnessed a number of mortar and rocket attacks on Iraqi Army strongholds, where American advisors operate.
Washington keeps a token military force in Iraq to assist the local regular forces. It has recently declared deploying additional troops in the Gulf region, in shadow of mounting tension with Iran. (end)
