China Blocks Hormuz Resolution, Urges UN to Learn from History
(MENAFN) China on Tuesday called on the UN Security Council to avoid repeating past errors as it vetoed a resolution concerning the Strait of Hormuz, which remains effectively controlled by Iran amid ongoing tensions with the US and Israel, according to reports.
Addressing the council, Ambassador Fu Cong criticized the Bahrain-led draft, saying it “fails to capture the root causes and full picture of the conflict in a comprehensive and balanced manner.”
The resolution, which proposed coordinated "defensive" measures to guarantee freedom of navigation in the strait, did not pass after Russia and China exercised their veto powers as permanent members of the Security Council. The draft received 11 votes in favor, while Colombia and Pakistan abstained.
Fu described the resolution as containing “one-sided condemnation and pressure” and warned, “Such language is highly susceptible to misinterpretation.”
Responding indirectly to US President Donald Trump’s warning that “whole civilization will die tonight” as his ceasefire deadline with Iran approached, Fu stated: “At a time when the United States is openly threatening the very survival of civilization, the current hostilities imposed on Iran are very likely to further escalate.”
He added that, if adopted, the draft would have conveyed a “wrong message” and raised “very serious concerns.”
