The Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) rescued ten Indian sailors from a sinking Indian cargo vessel off Dhofar coast on Friday morning.

The vessel was travelling from the western Indian state of Gujarat to Somalia via Dubai. It was carrying cars and spare parts.

The RNO vessel Sadah
, in coordination with the Maritime Security Center, carried out the rescue operation after receiving a distress call from the vessel.

Speaking about the incident, an official from the Indian Embassy in Muscat said, 'The ten sailors are safe in Salalah. They are being provided food and accommodation. We are in touch with the vessel owner in India.

'Unfortunately, one sailor is missing. We are working closely with the authorities in Oman for any update on the missing sailor.'

He added that although it was not a modern vessel, it was well-equipped to travel in high seas. 'As the sea got rough on Friday, the vessel reported engine failure and sent out a distress signal which was immediately addressed by the Omani authorities. The vessel sank four nautical miles from Dalkout port in Dhofar governorate.'
