Lebanese MPs reject cutting public sector salaries

(MENAFN) Lebanon's lawmakers rejected a proposal the government is reviewing for public sector workers to have their salaries reduced in order to tackle a budget deficit.

MP Hadi Abul Hassan stressed "it is not acceptable to reduce the salaries of public sector employees and to hold the Lebanese people responsible for the economic situation prevailing in the country."

The Lebanese government, the MP emphasized, ought to tackle tax evasion more effectively and reform the public sector for the budget deficit to be handled instead of cutting wages.

MP Chamel Roukoz also stated "there are a lot of other sectors that the government can reform to save money including telecom and electricity."
