EU voices optimism over meeting results on Syria

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, March 14 (KUNA) -- EU High Representative Federica Mogherini has expressed her conviction that the ministerial meeting of the third Brussels conference on Syria will be a success.
"I am sure it will be a big success including in terms of pledging," she told a dinner reception for the Brussels Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region.
Kuwait's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah was present at the event.
Mogherini said this year's Syria conference "is a bit special compared to the previous two. We see an evolution on the ground." "We will continue to work to empower women in the decision making peace process in Syria," she added.
Mogherini and UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen hosted a dinner with Syrian women last night.
It brought together leading female figures of Syria's civil society, foreign ministers as well as EU and UN representatives.
On his part, Belgian foreign minister Didier Reynders highlighted the crucial and paramount role of women in building a free and democratic future in Syria.
"As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Belgium will be particularly attentive that the voices of Syrian women are heard," he said in his welcome speech.
Geir Pedersen said the Syrian women have come forward with a shared vision on what Syria should look like and this also gives hope to the political process.
Furthermore, three Syrian women activists; Nawal Yaziji, Houda Atassi, and Bushra Abyab also addressed the gathering on their struggle for freedom and justice in their country. (end) nk.ma
