Pakistan- Several pneumonia cases surfacing in North Waziristan

(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) MIRANSHAH: A large number of children have been infected by pneumonia, flue and cough in North Waziristan in harsh cold weather which has perturbed the parents.

Children Specialist Dr Ali Muhammad at the Agency Headquarters Hospital said dozens of children infected by pneumonia, flue and cough are brought to the hospital daily. He said the pneumonia infected children are immediately admitted in the hospital.

Dr Ali Muhammad said extreme cold weather and cold winds are the main reasons for such diseases. He urged the parents to keep their children warm and also give them warm foods to protect them from such diseases.

ENT Specialist Muhammad Sadiq said a large number of elderly persons have also been affected by chest infection. He said the cold weather is the main cause behind such infections and precaution is needed to avoid such problems.

The hospital administration has requested the concerned authorities to provide medicines and vaccines for treatment of such diseases. It said treatment facilities are being provided to the affected people and the diseases will be overcome soon.

Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs usually caused by bacteria or a virus which can cause severe illness. It is usually spread by contact with an infected person or contaminated surfaces. Patients suffering from pneumonia experience cough, fever, and fast breathing. It is usually treated with antibiotics.

Flu is caused by the influenza A, B, or C virus. These viruses enter the respiratory tract and have an incubation period of 1 to 3 days. The virus usually attacks the upper respiratory tract – particularly the nose, throat, and upper airways. Symptoms are fever, a runny nose, headache, or muscle or joint pains.

Doctors say both the diseases can be avoided by minimising contact with infected persons and avoiding crowded places. These diseases also occur due to dry weather. However, doctors said recent rains have put good impact on weather and it is expected that complaints of these infections will reduce considerably with improvement of weather. Doctors say cold water shouldn't be consumed in winter and the body must be kept warm and protected to avoid cold-weather diseases.
