Qatar: LNG Mediterranean's leader for 12 years amid challenges
(MENAFN) Qatar is the largest producer of liquefied natural gas (LNG) within the Mediterranean, preserving its title for twelve years in a row, stated Turkish head of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Fatih Birol.
However, the IEA head suggested, LNG within the Mediterranean is not expected to witness growth due to growing suppliers in the international gas market.
The chief noted that "with Qatar, American gas, and incoming supply from a couple of countries in the Middle East region, it looks very difficult economically to constitute a major project in the eastern Mediterranean, plus there are some political issues as well."
Birol further added: "with those and political difficulties, it's not right to expect a major game-changing role from eastern Mediterranean gas. We're in the midst of gas abundance."
