EU FMs to discuss situation in Yemen and Iran

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, Nov 19 (KUNA) -- European Union Foreign Ministers began their formal meeting in Brussels Monday that will focus on developments in Yemen and EU ties with Iran.
"Today with the foreign ministers we will discuss first and foremost the situation in Yemen. I discussed yesterday on the phone with the Special Envoy of the United Nations (Martin Griffiths) on how the EU and the member states can best support his work in this crucial moment that could become an opening for an end to the war in Yemen," EU High Representative Federica Mogherini told reporters ahead of the meeting.
She said the Danish foreign minister will raise Iran today at the beginning of the meeting.
"It is very important for us to address all challenges and all complications that derive from Iranian behaviour, being it on the European soil or in the region, this is something we address very openly with our Iranian counterparts," she said.
"It is always very important for us to make clear distinctions between these issues and our full support to the implementation of the nuclear deal with Iran that continues to be very strong and on which we continue to work as much as we can," noted the EU foreign policy chief.
In October, Denmark recalled its ambassador from Tehran after accusing Iran of plotting an attack in Denmark against three Iranians suspected of belonging to the Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahvaz.
On the EU's special payment vehicle for payments to Iran, she said, "we support the work of the foreign ministers of France, Germany and the UK, but our work continues and their work continues.
"The involvement of the finance ministers of the three countries is of key importance at this stage, they are working hard to finalise it. I cannot tell you a date but I can tell you that work is progressing in a positive manner, the involvement of finance ministers is a crucial step that makes me think it will be delivered sooner rather than later," she added.
