Three foreign workers killed on Brunei bridge project

Three foreign construction workers were killed in an accident at the Temburong Bridge project site in Brunei on Sunday.

According to The Scoop , the accident took place at one of the bridge towers. Brunei's Ministry of Development issued a statement saying all construction activities have been put on hold while investigations are carried out.

Officers from the Ministry of Development, the Labour Department, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry are jointly investigating the case.

The nationalities of the victims were not provided in the statement. In Brunei, most construction workers came from Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia, Xinhua reported. In recent years, rising numbers of workers from India and Bangladesh have entered the job market.

The Temburong Bridge is set to be completed next year. Valued at BND1.6 billion (US$1.71 billion), the project will be the longest bridge in Southeast Asia. The 30-kilometer-long structure will connect the Temburong district with mainland Brunei.

The construction project is a joint venture between China State Construction Engineering Corporation and South Korea's Daelim.
