Govt considering legalising Airbnb operations in Oman: MoT official

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The government is considering a proposal to legalise the operations of Airbnb in Oman. Airbnb provides holiday cottages, apartments, homestays, hostel beds or hotel rooms on lease or rental basis across the world through its portal.

On the sidelines of third Annual Hotelier Summit GCCon Wednesday, Eng Mohammed Mahmoud al Zadjali, director general of Investor Services and Quality Control in the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) said, 'We are working to make it legal and protect the tourism sector from any low quality service. Focus is basically on the quality.

'We want to make sure that the bed and breakfast service provided is licensed and as per approved standards set by Airbnb. We are working together to make it legal, make it formal.'

Zadjali said that at present those who have registered their accommodations on Airbnb are not legal. 'As they are not licensed from MoT, this is illegal. We do not mind they register with Airbnb but they need to be registered and licensed through the ministry.'

Airbnb, a popular portal has lodging listings in thousands of cities across the world.
