Turkish pres. Pope Francis mull over Jerusalem

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ANKARA, Dec 29 (KUNA) -- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pope Francis on Friday discussed the latest developments of Jerusalem.

In a telephone conversation, they underlined the significance of protecting the status of Jerusalem, which is the key to regional stability, Turkey's Anadolu news agency.

Turkey's president and Pope Francis commended a recent UN resolution rejecting the US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, it said.

Both sides also emphasized that joint efforts should be exerted to protect the status quo of Jerusalem, which is sacred to Islam, Christianity and Judaism.

On December 21, the UN General Assembly overwhelming adopted a resolution rejecting US President Donald Trump's move by a vote of 128-9, with 35 abstentions. (end) rs.mt
