Rio Tinto to increase Pilbara fleet
(MENAFN) Rio Tinto will be adding more unmanned autonomous tow trucks that it uses in the Pilbara by over 50% as part of a 5b USD productivity drive.
Komatsu and Caterpillar manufacturers will retrofit 48 huge trucks to permit unmanned operation, lifting the total number operated by Rio in the region to over 130 by 2019.
According to Rio, the driverless trucks are safer, and reduce the number of employees exposed to dangerous or critical risk situations.
Iron ore CEO of Rio Tinto said: "The expansion of our autonomous fleet via retrofitting helps to improve safety, (and) unlocks significant productivity gains."
