The National Museum of Qatar yesterday took a major step forward in capturing the imagination of the country's population with the launch of an innovative schools competition.
It is the largest competition of its kind inviting young people to create unique crowd-sourced installation in time for the museum opening in December 2018. The nation-wide competition, run in partnership with the Ministry of Education, will create the largest crowd-sourced installation of its kind. It provides a once-in-a-lifetime chance for students to have their work featured in one of the most ambitious museum projects in the world when it opens in December 2018.
Participating students will express what ‘Qatar Means to Them' on a series of beautiful, personalised postcard designs, reflecting the country's diversity, inclusivity and optimism for the future.
Their creative contributions will form the basis of a large-scale digital display to be unveiled at the museum's official opening in December 2018.
In addition, 40 lucky students will be given the opportunity to attend the grand opening with their parents and teachers, with those chosen selected as being the most creative, inspiring and unusual responses to the competition question.
The National Museum tells the story of Qatar and its people, giving voice to the country's rich heritage and history whilst celebrating its future. One of the most significant cultural projects in the country, it is an inclusive space that offers something for everyone through highlighting the extensive network of ties between Qatar and nations and people from around the world.
The museum highlights Qatar's commitment to developing cultural spaces that develop, promote and sustain a thriving cultural sector and build a national spirit of participation. Its opening is widely anticipated across the country, providing a physical manifestation of Qatar's proud identity and connecting the country's history with its diverse and cosmopolitan present.
Commenting on the competition, Sheikha Amna bint Abdulaziz bin Jassim Al Thani, Director of the National Museum, said: 'The National Museum is a space that defines and celebrates Qatar's past, present and future. This competition provides the perfect platform for young minds around the country to help us imagine and express what that future might look like. Young people hold the keys to our collective future, so it is only right that their opinions and voices are heard. We encourage as many schools and pupils as possible to join us in creating the largest crowd-sourced installation of its kind and to make their mark in this unique and beautiful space.'
From November 2017, fifty A4 art cards that have been specially designed for the competition are being issued to every school in Qatar. Students are requested to either draw or write their responses to the question of 'What does Qatar mean to you?', attach a passport size photo to the card and return these to the National Museum. All cards submitted will be electronically scanned and prepared for digital display on the museum's opening night.
The competition requires that individual schools evenly distribute their allocation of 50 postcards across various age-ranges within their school. It is at the discretion of teachers as to which classes complete the postcards and thereby are part of the competition. Postcards should be completed no later than February 28, 2018. The Ministry of Education will arrange for the collection of postcards from all schools during March 2018 and these will then be delivered to the offices of the National Museum. The competition is open to every child in Qatar.
The National Museum will look for the best responses to the competition question and select ten winning students from each of the following age-ranges: Kindergarden; Primary School 1-6; Middle School 7-9 and High School 10-12. Schools will be notified of the winning students no later than September 30, 2018.
