No promotion in Telangana colleges if marks below 50%

Telangana has new rules for its colleges. Now students will have to secure at least 50% marks in their semester exams to be promoted to the next year.

Moreover, they will require a minimum of 75% attendance in the first semester to be eligible for promotion.

These new norms will be a part of the choice-based credit system (CBCS) introduced in 2016.

Explaining the new rules, Papi Reddy, Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) chairman, said, "A first-year student who secures less than 50% marks in subjects prescribed for the first and second semester will be detained. The same shall be followed for other semesters."

However, there will be no detention in odd semesters.

Earlier, students were promoted even if they scored less than 50%.


Who will be affected by the move?

The decision will impact nine lakh students across 1,300 degree colleges: three lakh in first year across Science, Arts and Commerce, and six lakh in second and third years.

However, there's still no clarity about its implementation.

"We are waiting for the Telangana government to release the detailed structure," said Ramana Reddy, Telangana Degree and PG College Managements Association president.

TSCHE is planning a portal containing details of former and current students from Class X to PhD. Attendance, marks, placement details etc will be available. It will be the first time in India that all information about all students will be available on one platform.
