Oman- Masirah Island becoming a hotspot for tourists says government official

One of Oman's largest islands Masirah is becoming a popular tourist spot a government official has said.

Located southeast of the coast of sultanate the island amid turquoise waters has some breathtaking natural landscape.

According to a press release a number of hotel and service tourism projects are coming up in the area to cater to the growing numbers of tourists. 'The hotels in Masirah wilayat are crammed with guests especially during holidays' Khamis Ali Khamis al Jahmani a government official said. Some popular tourist facilities are the Masirah Resort Masirah Hotel Dana Gulf and the Sirabish Hotel Jahmani added. 'Visitor turnout increases with the start of May and peaks in June. A lot of foreign tourists reside in camps close to the sea. Omani visitors and those from other Gulf countries visit the place' he said.

A major attraction here is the marine life. Visitors also cannot escape the montane grasslands of Ras Half Rasiah Alijah and other similar places that give the island its alluring look. The island's moderate climate all makes it an year-round destination for tourists. Its pristine unspoilt beaches offer tourists unparalleled opportunity to watch turtles.

The island can be reached by large ferries locally called Aliassorah - a large vessel that carries cars goods and people to and from the island. Owned by the National Ferries Company these vessels play an important role in strengthening and revitalising social and economic development. Two more ferries were added to the service in August 2014.

Each ferry has the capacity to carry 154 passengers and 38 vehicles of various sizes. Water sports are a key attraction at Masirah Island. Besides surfing diving and jet skiing are also popular sports. For those interested in archaeology the old fort in Marsis offers a peek into the history of the wilayat. Another monument on the island that is popular with tourists is the Islamic cemetery in Safaji village.
