Timely caign to help Syrian refugees: UAE paper

SHARJAH 26th January 2016 (WAM) - As the prevailing tough winter conditions and freezing weather have greatly added to the woes of migrants and refugees the UAE stepped in to provide AED 6 million urgent aid to Syrian refugees in Lebanon a UAE paper commented today.
''Temperatures have dropped to below zero degrees Celsius and accompanied by strong winds especially in the Levant region. In fact the conditions are getting worse raising questions over how refugees will survive the tough winter particularly those who live in camps temporary homes and tents that cannot withstand heavy rainfall and strong winds'' wrote The Gulf Today in its daily editorial.
Going by this background the Sharjah-based English daily said it is heartening to note that the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation is providing urgent winter aid worth AED 6 million to Syrian refugees in Lebanon and the people affected by the cold weather that is currently sweeping the region.
''Coming as per the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces the aid includes blankets clothing and food which will be purchased from the Lebanese market in coordination with the UAE Embassy in Lebanon'' it remarked.
''Separately the decision of The Big Heart Foundation (TBHF) a global humanitarian charity dedicated to helping refugees and people in need worldwide to launch a fund-raising campaign to help Syrian refugees survive the harsh winter is another noble mission that deserves the support of one and all'' the paper continued.
The paper added that the campaign launched under the directives of Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi wife of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah and UNHCR Eminent Advocate for Refugee Children will surely help alleviate the suffering of Syrian refugees living in neighbouring countries.
As Mariam Al Hammadi Director of Salam Ya Seghar an initiative by TBHF explained "The campaign provides an opportunity for one and all to contribute to helping refugees who are in even greater need during the bitterly cold winter months."
Recently more than 120 humanitarian organisations and United Nations agencies issued a joint appeal urging the world to raise its voice and call for an end to the Syria crisis.
''With years of strife and millions of its people scattered across the globe peace is what Syrians yearn for. Extending a helping hand to refugees at a crucial time like this substantiates the fact that charity and goodness are deeply rooted in the Emirati society'' The Gulf Today concluded.
