Obama taps Lynch to succeed Holder as US attorney general

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) President Barack Obama on Saturday announced his nomination of US Attorney Loretta Lynch as his next attorney general to succeed Eric Holder.

If confirmed, Lynch - an experienced prosecutor who has litigated political corruption, terrorism and organized crime cases - would be the first African-American woman to serve as the highest official of the US Justice Department.

During the White House announcement, Obama described Lynch as a "tough, fair and independent" lawyer.

"It is pretty hard to be more qualified for this job than Loretta," Obama said. He said that "she is not about splash, she is about substance." He urged the US Senate to confirm her "without delay." Lynch is currently the US attorney for the Eastern District of New York.
