Vegetable prices stable as local farms boost availability
(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Vegetable prices at the Abu Hamour Central Market have been stable of late due to the availability of good-quality local products in reasonable quantities.
Compared to the same period last year, prices have even dropped for some varieties thanks to the efforts of Qatari farms in prolonging the production season of various vegetables.
According to a report by local Arabic daily Arrayah on recent vegetable prices at the market, a box of tomatoes weighing above 5kg cost QR20-25, a box of around 5kg of cucumber was priced at QR18-20, while a 4kg box of cauliflower was available at QR20.
Also, a box of around 5kg of eggplants, a midsize sack of red onions and a similar sack of potatoes were all available for QR10 each.
In addition, the prices of sweet melons and watermelons were becoming "more and more reasonable" due to the good supply of Iranian melons. Also some varieties of these items are produced locally as well, it is reported.
Many customers have stressed the positive developments regarding prices and acknowledged the efforts of the government in supporting local farms and encouraging them to produce more vegetables and extend the production season. Such efforts ultimately benefit consumers, they point out.
Customers have also expressed their preference for locally produced vegetables over imported ones as they are considered fresher and more reasonably priced.
