Oman- MoAF supplies coconut palm seedlings in Dhofar

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MoAF) is continuing with its project of distributing 50,000 coconut palm seedlings in a period of five years in the Governorate of Dhofar.

The project aims to distribute the seedlings, imported from Ivory Coast, to the farmers in the governorate in order spread awareness about the palm trees and replace non-productive palms.

According to the agricultural census of 2012-13, the number of coconut palm trees in the governorate was 150,000, planted on an estimated area of 1,455 acres.

These trees produce around 7,000 tonnes of coconuts every year of which 1,700 tonnes is exported while the remainder is kept for local consumption.

Coconut production is considered to be the second largest after bananas in the Governorate of Dhofar.

The ministry had previously initiated a project to distribute 27,000 seedlings to the farmers during the period from 1998 to 2017.

The ministry also conducts a number of researches in order to find the best methods of production and comes out with a number of promising results.

From 2008 to 2012, the ministry also worked on a five-year project to combat diseases that affect coconut palm trees.
