Cop charged with bribery in court

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A police corporal, who allegedly sought Dh1,500 bribe from a driving licence applicant to help him pass the test in an unlawful way, has been charged with bribery in court.

The 28-year-old Emirati officer allegedly knew an employee at a driving institute and he solicited the money from the Indian man, 25, for his unlawful favour of helping him pass the test by approaching that employee. The officer's help would be by abusing his post and getting the employee to make the applicant pass without going through a real driving test. The applicant has been accused in the Court of First Instance of offering a bribe to a public officer.

The case unfolded between May and September 17, 2017.

A police officer told the prosecutor that the driving licence applicant said during interrogation he had met the police corporal at a hospital in Al Muraqqabat in May 2017 when he was getting medical treatment for assault injuries. The applicant admitted to the police of having sought the corporal's help in obtaining a driving licence and the latter asked for Dh1,500 for his help.

Copies of relevant WhatsApp audio messages between the two defendants were used as evidence by the public prosecution.
