A blazing bravura performance of some of the quintessential compositions of Italian opera icons Gioachino Rossini, Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini marked a fitting finale of the Italian Week on Monday night at the Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC).
As the birthplace of opera, Italy prides itself with the finest opera composers, singers and musicians including seasoned soprano Silvana Froli and young conductor Jacopo Sipari di Pescasseroli who impressed the audience as they performed along with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra at the sold out concert.
Naturally gifted with a soprano voice, Froli demonstrated her extraordinary vocal prowess she gained from years of systematic study, personal research and advice from acclaimed opera singers. Her performance at the concert was received with ovations from an appreciative audience at the packed QNCC Auditorium 3.
Considered one of the most impressive conductors of his generation, young maestro di Pescasseroli led the Qatar Philharmonic with exceptional charisma and energy. Together, they played with remarkable passion consistently throughout the show which was well applauded by the crowd. It was a great time to be an operaphile enjoying a rich repertoire of opera pieces by three of the greatest Italian composers in one night. The concert included a selection of items from renowned Puccini masterpieces including Donde lieta usci from La bohème, Intermezzo from Suor Angelica, Vissi d´arte From Tosca, Un bel di vedremo from Madame Butterfly, Intermezzo, Act III from Manon Lescaut, In questa reggia from Turandot and Sola, perduta, abbandonata from Manon Lescaut. The concert programme also included Rossini's Overture to The Barber of Seville, Overture to La Cenerentola (Cinderella) and Overture to La gazza ladra (The Thieving Magpie) as well as Verdi's Overture to Nabucco and Overture to La forza del destino and Pietro Mascagni's Prelude to Cavalleria rusticana.
The Italian Week, organised by the Italian Embassy in cooperation with the Italian Trade Agency and The Italian Chamber of Commerce in Qatar, was a celebration of some of the most well-known elements of Italian culture including food, fashion and style, art, and music. While it focused mainly on Italian cuisine through special menus offered at Italian restaurants around Doha, the week-long event also featured seminar on Mediterranean diet, workshop on Italian cooking, Italian coffee and gelato tasting, a fashion show featuring 50 years of Italian fashion and the opera concert which concluded the wide range of events and activities held at various locations.
