India health minister: cancer is 'divine justice'

(MENAFN) The health minister from Assam state, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced that he believes cancer "is divine justice" caused by "past sins of a person."

The statement enraged Indians all across the country while cancer patients and their families expressed how disappointed they were. His remarks also affected the opposition parties that they said the statement was "unfortunate" and called for a public apology.

However, the purpose of the statement which the minister made on Wednesday in Guwahati at a public event was to "cover his failure to control the spread of cancer in the state", as believed by State opposition party the All India United Democratic Front.

The Times of India quoted his statement "God makes us suffer when we sin. Sometimes we come across young men getting inflicted with cancer or young men meeting with accidents. If you observe the background you will come to know that it's divine justice. Nothing else. We have to suffer that divine justice."
