The Renault 5 is back! Says French automaker Renault

29 January 2015: French automaker Renault has revealed plans to recreate a classic model with all the modern features you would expect.
The Renault 5 was a hit supermini long before the Clio was conceived. It was first introduced back in 1972 and managed to survive for over two decades before being retired in 1996. And now Renault has confirmed that it is going to be introducing an ultra-modern reimagining of the 5 creating a car that is both affordable and technically advanced.
A prototype of the new Renault 5 was shown to Auto Express this week taking inspiration for the design of the original on the outside while offering an impressive array of gadgetry within.
While the so-called Valve Up prototype is set to cost around the same as the current generation of the Clio it will be more efficient thanks to the use of newer smaller engines. A hybrid model is also on the cards with Renault's design team expecting it to be able to achieve around 134mpg thanks to its petrol and electric engines.
The interior will feature a dashboard which is fully digital meaning analogue dials of old are being ditched completely. It will also be touch-sensitive to allow for exacting control over all of the car's other electronic features.
Tablet integration is another element that Renault is working into the new 5 allowing other passengers to manage the in-car entertainment without having to be within reach of the centre console.
It is unclear exactly when the new Renault 5 will be commercially available but those who are enamoured by this French firm's stylish cars can pick up impressive secondhand models like the Clio for a low price.
