Saudi- Makkah traffic police crack down on offenders

(MENAFN- Arab News) Makkah's traffic Police department has intensified its awareness and inspection campaign in the city targeting construction firms reckless young drivers and those transporting pilgrims.

Makkah has one of the Kingdom's highest rates of traffic offenses largely due to the millions of pilgrims that are transported to and from the city during the Umrah and Haj seasons.

In addition construction companies involved in the expansion of the Grand Mosque and the building of several new hotels are also breaking the law said Capt. Ali Al-Zahrani spokesperson of the Makkah traffic department.

'Many of these companies have been transporting their workers unsafely and unlawfully. The department has been cracking down on violators from these companies' said Al-Zahrani.

He said traffic officers have found 4315 vehicles being used for purposes other than stated on its licenses. This includes private and commercial vehicles. Some had been transporting passengers illegally he said.

Al-Zahrani said police officers arrested 169 wanted criminals for various crimes during routine vehicle inspections in the holy city. Over the past 40 days they also arrested 945 motorists for jumping red lights and an additional 107 drivers for committing repeat offenses during the period.

Officers arrested 34 drivers for drifting and also recorded 3927 other violations over the past month. He said the department has deployed more undercover officers in the city.

Al-Zahrani said the Saher system has resulted in a 9.5 percent drop in injuries and 8 percent decline in deaths caused by traffic accidents over the past month. Officers have removed 2330 abandoned vehicles from the city's streets and fined 448 motorbike riders.

He said the department is monitoring several hotspots in the city particularly areas congested with pilgrims and visitors.
