when alomairi was diagnosed with deafness in her right ear 20 years ago she was told there was no treatment available. though she could hear with one ear over time she found it increasingly difficult to cope especially while at work when it was difficult for her to understand her superior or to communicate with passengers while driving.

but with the recent advancements that have enriched medicalscience today when she went to the dubai hospital recently doctors put an implant in her right ear the bonebridge enabling her to hear with that ear.

the pioneering bonebridge implant transmits sounds to the inner ear through bone conduction. the minimally invasive surgery requires a short recovery period and aesthetically is an improvement on protruding hearing aids.

it consists of two parts: an externally worn part the audio processor and an internal part the bone conduction implant which is surgically placed under the skin behind the ear.

dr jamal kassouma performed the surgery and dr mohamed fawzi moustafa activated the implant system.

“i am very happy that i underwent the treatment” alomairi said after the surgery. “i can hear now.”
she had to spend around two days in hospital for recovery.

“patients in the middle east with hearing difficulties now have access to these advanced technologies that will change the quality of their lives for better” dr moustafa said.

david raetz ceo of med-el middle east said they were delighted with the first implantation in dubai and that the device had met the patient’s and specialists’ expectations.
