Ancient Shipwreck Off Türkiye Enters Guinness World Records

Date:

(MENAFN) A shipwreck uncovered during underwater archaeological excavations near Kekova Island in Türkiye's southern Antalya province has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest known shipwreck in the world.

Hakan Oniz, head of the Department of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage at Akdeniz University's Faculty of Fine Arts, said his research team has spent years exploring the Mediterranean coastline as part of work conducted for the Culture and Tourism Ministry.

He noted that the researchers have identified numerous historically significant shipwrecks and presented their findings to the international community.

Excavations near Kekova Island, which began in 2024, led to the recovery of approximately 4,700-year-old amphorae from the vessel now holding the world record.

Oniz said the discovery generated considerable international media coverage, reaching billions of people around the world.

"This is a source of pride for us. As our president has said, Türkiye is one of the world's leading countries in underwater archaeology. In our view, it is among the top two or three countries," Oniz said.
