Türkiye Rejects EU Commission Report Over Alleged Double Standards
(MENAFN) Türkiye criticized the European Commission's 2026 assessment on Wednesday, dismissing several accusations as baseless and accusing certain EU officials of applying double standards while pursuing an inconsistent policy toward Ankara.
Responding to the assessment, which was released under the European Union's 2026 Enlargement Package, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said the document reflected what it described as the EU's "prejudiced and unfair attitude" toward Türkiye.
The ministry expressed particular opposition to the report's findings on political standards, judicial independence and fundamental rights, arguing that the accusations presented in these areas lacked credibility.
Ankara also accused the EU of backing "unrealistic and legally questionable positions" advanced by Greece and the Greek Cypriot administration, while failing to recognize the legitimate interests and rights of Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
Addressing the Cyprus dispute, the ministry argued that the European Union cannot play a constructive role in resolving the conflict while continuing to support the Greek Cypriot side without conditions.
Türkiye further challenged the report's conclusions regarding the Eastern Mediterranean, maintaining that they contradict international law and the principle of fairness.
The ministry also rejected the document's comments on the maritime delimitation agreement between Türkiye and Libya, describing the assessment as legally invalid.
