German Housing Benefit Changes Threaten Low-Income Families

Date:

(MENAFN) Proposed changes to Germany's housing benefit system could place additional financial pressure on vulnerable households, potentially cutting off both rental assistance and access to food banks and subsidized social stores, according to reports published Wednesday.

Estimates from the Housing Ministry indicate that approximately one-third of current housing benefit recipients could lose their eligibility if the planned reforms are implemented.

The consequences may extend beyond the loss of rental support, as some beneficiaries also rely on their housing assistance documentation to demonstrate financial hardship and qualify for discounted essential goods and food aid.

The potential changes have raised concerns among operators of the “Waller helfen” social department store in Montabaur, which serves around 2,500 registered customers. They fear that many people who currently depend on the facility could become ineligible for its services beginning next year.

“Inflation is affecting a lot of people,” said Rene Schneider, who works at the store.

Schneider warned that single parents and retired people could face particularly difficult circumstances, especially those earning too much to receive additional welfare support but not enough to meet their housing expenses.

Under the government's proposed measures, a housing benefit increase due to take effect on Jan. 1, 2027, would be put on hold. The heating expense allowance would also be reduced by half, while changes to the eligibility calculation would narrow the pool of households entitled to receive assistance.
