Skulptur Projekte Münster 2027 Unveils 13 New Artist Commissions
The curatorial collective What, How & for Whom / WHW, comprising Ivet Ćurlin, Nataša Ilić, and Sabina Sabolović, will serve as artistic director. The exhibition's central theme is the Peace of Westphalia, the 1648 treaty that concluded the Thirty Years' War and was partially negotiated in Münster, leading to the city's motto of“peace through dialogue.” The curators aim to contrast this history with“Münster's involvement in Europe's long history of violent combat” and address the current global landscape of“a world shaped by wars and smouldering conflicts,” according to a press release.
Among the recently revealed commissions are works by Ali Cherri, Kapwani Kiwanga, Nolan Oswald Dennis, and Kosen Ohtsubo. Cherri will create multiple large-scale sculptures for the garden of the Officers' Casino, a component of the Gremmendorf military barracks, which were constructed by the Nazis and used by the British military until 2012. Kiwanga's project will investigate“the ambiguous force of water,” encompassing its life-sustaining and destructive aspects, such as the 1660 flooding of Münster by the Prince Bishop.
For his commission, Dennis plans to map the Berg Fidel neighborhood in southern Münster“onto the cosmos and vice versa, constructing an observatory as a hyper-local calendric device,” as detailed in a release. Ohtsubo, who has studied ikebana since the 1960s, will utilize local apple trees removed after they cease bearing fruit, transforming them into a significant installation in central Münster.
