The US dollar stayed under pressure on Wednesday and fell to a one-month low as Treasury yields declined after Democrats secured control of both chambers of Congress. A divided government could constrain federal spending and bring closer scrutiny of the AI sector, weighing on growth expectations and weakening the case for further Federal Reserve tightening.
Markets still price in a 25-basis-point interest rate hike in December, providing some support to the dollar and yields. However, expectations for further increases through mid-2027 have been pared back in the recent sessions. September JOLTS data pushed the other way. Job openings rose by 333,000 from Augu’t’s upwardly revised level, beating expectations and reaching a four-month high.
This ’eek’s data will test the repricing. An ISM services reading above 50, as expected, followed by strong payrolls figures later in the week, could rebuild expectations of further tightening in 2027 and lift yields and the dollar. Softer readings would reinforce growth concerns and extend the decline. In addition to economic data, market participants will be closely monitoring political developments in the US. Geopolitical conditions in the Middle East could remain an important factor, as renewed escalation with Iran could increase oil prices and boost demand for the dollar as a safe-haven asset.
Across the Atlantic, the dollar fell to a multi-week low against the Sterling, ahead of Thursday’s Bank of England decision, where markets expect the first interest rate increase since August 2023. Guidance pointing to further tightening could extend the pou’d’s gains, while a more cautious message may allow the dollar to recover some ground.
