Iran Rejects US Response, Sets Conditions for Reopening Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) Iran described Washington's reply to its demands as "not convincing" on Tuesday, maintaining that maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz would resume only after the United States meets seven conditions set by Tehran.
Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei said Washington must address all of Iran's demands clearly and comprehensively before the strategic waterway can reopen.
"The US response to Iran's rights and demands was not convincing," Rezaei said in a social media post.
"They must respond fully and explicitly to Iran's seven conditions and fulfill them. Only then will the Strait of Hormuz be reopened," he added.
The reported conditions include establishing a ceasefire throughout the Middle East, unfreezing Iranian funds held overseas and removing sanctions targeting the country's oil industry.
Tehran is also demanding an end to the US naval blockade, compensation for wartime damage, the withdrawal of American forces and guarantees against further threats or interference.
Rezaei's comments came as Qatar continued its diplomatic efforts to facilitate an agreement between Iran and the United States.
Reports citing sources familiar with the mediation process indicated that Washington had accepted a draft memorandum of understanding delivered to Tehran by a Qatari delegation on Monday.
