Former US Military Official Faces Probe Over Leaked Ukraine, Iran Secrets
(MENAFN) US federal investigators are examining allegations that former Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia disclosed classified information about Ukraine and Iran to members of the media, according to reports published Tuesday.
Sylvia, who previously held a senior military planning position at the Pentagon, could face a court-martial after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth removed him from his post last week.
His dismissal was part of a broader administration effort to address unauthorized disclosures of sensitive government information.
An internal Pentagon assessment reportedly alleged that Sylvia failed four polygraph examinations and acknowledged the incidents during two recorded interviews that lasted more than two hours.
Investigators further claimed that he provided confidential details to a journalist, including information about US military support for Ukraine, ammunition reserves and senior-level discussions involving Iran.
The allegations also indicate that Sylvia relied on notes he had made while examining a classified document to brief the journalist on Washington's assistance to Kyiv, despite not having permission to share the material.
In addition, investigators reportedly found that Sylvia deleted an entire conversation with the journalist from the encrypted messaging platform Signal after receiving a message he believed was related to Iran.
