Bengal Cop Shoots Himself Dead On Duty With Service Revolver, Probe Launched
The incident took place on Tuesday night on National Highway 19 near Panagarh Bypass. The constable, identified as Sanjay Jana, was posted at the Kanksa Traffic Guard and was originally from Asansol.
According to police sources, Jana was on duty along with other policemen when a truck parked by the roadside moved away. His colleagues then spotted him lying unconscious on the road in a pool of blood.
The policemen immediately rushed him to a hospital in Durgapur, where doctors examined him and declared him dead.
The police have launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident and what prompted the constable to allegedly take his own life. A forensic team has also been informed and will visit the spot to collect evidence and conduct an examination.
The area has been cordoned off as part of the investigation.
Police sources said Jana lived in the quarters at Asansol Police Lines and is survived by his 11-year-old son. Investigators are trying to establish whether he had been facing any personal or other difficulties in recent days.
The police will also question his family members to gather information about his state of mind and any circumstances that might have led to the incident.
In a similar incident in September, the body of a 49-year-old Kolkata Police commando, identified as Deepak Tamang, was recovered from a toilet at the Police Training School (PTS) in Kolkata. Tamang, a resident of Kalimpong in north Bengal, was found hanging inside the premises.
The body was subsequently sent to SSKM Hospital. Investigators reportedly found saliva flowing from his mouth and a ligature mark around his neck.
Police officers had described the incident as a suicide, but the department initiated a separate investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding his death.
Tamang had served as a commando in the Kolkata Police for several years and was reportedly held in high regard within the police force.
