Rescuers Recover Two Bodies as Search Continues for Missing Himalayan Trekkers
(MENAFN) Indian rescue teams have recovered the bodies of two trekkers along a mountain route in Uttarakhand, while efforts continued Wednesday to locate six others who remain missing amid severe snowfall and challenging terrain.
The remains of a man and a woman were found Tuesday near Kedar Kharak, at an elevation of around 4,000 meters (13,123 feet). Uttarkashi District Disaster Management Officer Shardul Gusain confirmed the discovery, noting that the victims had not yet been identified.
A joint rescue operation involving the State Disaster Response Force and the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering located the bodies while searching along the Kedartal trekking route.
However, difficult weather and terrain conditions forced rescuers to halt the operation at approximately 3 p.m. Tuesday (0930 GMT), after which the teams returned to their base camp.
Authorities planned to restart the search on Wednesday, with additional rescue personnel, supplies and life-support equipment being sent to the area to support the operation.
Preparations were also underway to establish an alternative helipad closer to the location, allowing rescue teams to transport the recovered bodies to Harsil.
The trekking group began its journey on Oct. 27 and was scheduled to return two days later, on Oct. 29. When the group failed to arrive as expected, authorities launched a search operation.
Rescue workers have encountered substantial obstacles, including heavy snowfall, limited visibility and difficult conditions at high altitude.
The status of the six remaining missing trekkers has not yet been established, and authorities have not provided further details about their whereabouts.
