Nauseda Calls for Rethinking Term Used to Describe Russian Attacks

Date:

(MENAFN) Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda questioned Tuesday whether the term “hybrid threats” accurately describes certain Russian operations, arguing that some recent incidents involved direct physical attacks, according to local reports.

In a statement issued by the presidential office, Nauseda called the terminology a “convenient euphemism” that fails to clearly identify the nature of the activities.

“Some of the recent attacks in essence are kinetic attacks,” he said.

Nauseda made the comments while opening the Berlin Security Conference, jointly organized by Germany and Lithuania.

He stressed that transatlantic cooperation remains central to collective security, adding that a stronger European role in defense matters should reinforce NATO rather than weaken the alliance.

The Lithuanian president also emphasized growing military cooperation with Germany, highlighting Berlin's decision to station its 45th Armored Brigade in Lithuania and the expanding partnership between their defense industries.

He described Germany as Lithuania's leading defense industry partner, pointing to plans to build a Rheinmetall artillery ammunition manufacturing facility in Lithuania, as well as a joint initiative with KNDS to assemble, maintain and repair Leopard tanks.

Nauseda also presented Lithuania's main priorities ahead of its presidency of the Council of the European Union during the first half of 2027.
