Russian Court Fines Google Telegram Over Failure to Remove Banned Content

Date:

(MENAFN) A court in Russia imposed a combined penalty of 18.4 million rubles, equivalent to approximately $226,000, on Google and Telegram on Tuesday for failing to remove material prohibited under Russian law.

The Tagansky District Court in Moscow issued the fines following administrative proceedings against the two technology companies.

Telegram received penalties totaling 14.6 million rubles ($179,000) across three separate violations involving its failure to delete restricted content. The material included information connected to recruitment for a terrorist organization outlawed in Russia, as well as a book classified by Russian authorities as extremist.

Google was ordered to pay 3.8 million rubles ($47,000) for leaving online information that Russian authorities said discredited the country's armed forces and state institutions.

Russian courts have repeatedly taken action against international digital platforms, imposing financial penalties over their failure to remove prohibited material or meet domestic regulatory requirements.
