Voters across the United States delivered a clear message during the 2026 midterm elections, with concerns about living costs and dissatisfaction with the country's direction emerging as dominant themes in early results and exit polling.

According to exit polls conducted by SSRS for a consortium of major US media organisations, economic pressures played a central role in shaping voter decisions. Nearly nine in ten voters identified the cost of living as either a crucial or major factor influencing their choice at the ballot box.

The findings point to a difficult political environment for President Donald Trump and Republican candidates. Voters expressed widespread frustration over rising prices, and many reported feeling financially worse off than they were two years earlier.

The economy appeared to outweigh other campaign messages. While Republicans spent much of the campaign warning about the consequences of Democratic victories, voters remained focused on everyday expenses such as groceries, fuel and household costs.

Exit polling suggested that many Americans placed responsibility for higher prices on the current administration. Nearly two-thirds of respondents blamed Trump for rising costs, while three-quarters said they were either dissatisfied or angry about the nation's overall direction.

The results also highlighted broader concerns among voters, including unease about government corruption and a growing sense that leaders were not adequately addressing economic challenges.

Trump's Endorsements Face Setbacks As Voter Priorities Shift

Beyond the broader political implications, the election also raised questions about Trump's influence within his own party.

Several candidates closely associated with the president struggled in races where Republicans had hoped to perform strongly. Trump-backed Senate candidates Lindsey Graham in South Carolina and Michael Whatley in North Carolina were defeated, while Ken Paxton lost his race in Texas.

Those outcomes are likely to intensify debate about candidate selection strategies and whether personal loyalty has been given greater weight than broader electoral appeal.

The exit polls also indicated changes within the coalition that helped power Trump's 2024 election victory. Republicans recorded notable declines in support among Black men, Latino voters and younger voters, suggesting fractures within key parts of the party's previous electoral base.

In the final weeks of the campaign, Trump and Republican allies increasingly focused on warnings about Democratic control, portraying opponents as radical and dangerous. However, the strategy appeared to have limited impact with voters who remained more concerned about economic conditions.

Throughout the campaign, Trump repeatedly argued that Democratic victories would fundamentally alter the country. Yet the election results suggested voters were not persuaded that such warnings were more urgent than their financial concerns.

The broader lesson from the midterms was that economic issues remained at the centre of the political conversation. While fear-based messaging has often played a role in American elections, voters this time appeared more interested in practical answers to rising costs and financial strain.
