Rubio Says Washington Reviews Türkiye Proposal for Black Sea Grain Exports
(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington is considering several initiatives, including a proposal submitted by Türkiye, to resume grain transportation across the Black Sea, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding global food supplies amid the continuing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Speaking at a press conference in Atlanta after a G20 foreign ministers' meeting on Saturday, Rubio said Türkiye and India had presented suggestions aimed at restoring grain shipments disrupted by the war.
“We are examining proposals, for example, that were forwarded to us ... from Türkiye in that regard. And we'll continue to explore that,” Rubio said, adding that the US would support efforts to establish an arrangement enabling shipments to resume.
He stressed, however, that restoring grain exports would not bring the wider conflict to an end.
“It doesn't solve the war, but at least it solves a unique aspect of it,” he said, highlighting the consequences of interrupted Black Sea trade for international food security, particularly in countries facing greater vulnerability.
Rubio added that interest in reaching an agreement had gained momentum internationally, with several nations exploring possible roles in guaranteeing or facilitating such an arrangement.
