Israel Carving New Roads Across South Lebanon, State Media Says

Date:

(MENAFN) Israeli forces are cutting new roads through mountains and valleys in southern Lebanon to link their military positions, a Lebanese state news agency reported Saturday.

The work covers the western and central sectors of the south, where Israeli troops have set up posts on occupied Lebanese soil, the agency said. It added that the construction is proceeding alongside Israeli demolition operations in the same areas.

The central sector includes Aita al-Shaab, Maroun al-Ras, Bint Jbeil and Aitaroun. Maroun al-Ras looks out over the Israeli settlement of Avivim across the border.

The western sector takes in Naqoura, Yarine, Dhayra, Marwahin and Alma al-Shaab, where the Lebanese army and the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) are deployed.

The activity follows US-sponsored military and technical talks between Lebanon and Israel in Tampa, Florida, on Oct. 20-21. The meetings closed with no announced breakthrough and no joint statement. Reports suggested both sides agreed to keep negotiating, though disputes persisted over an Israeli pullout from Lebanon and the disarmament of Hezbollah.

Under a framework agreement reached in June, Israel is to withdraw gradually from occupied Lebanese territory, while the Lebanese army deploys and armed groups are disarmed. Israel has nonetheless continued military operations in Lebanon.

Since March 2, the attacks have left at least 4,386 people dead, 12,407 wounded and more than 1 million displaced, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.
