Türkiye Offers Egypt Maritime Boundary Agreement Based on Mutual Interests
(MENAFN) Türkiye is prepared to conclude an agreement with Egypt to define maritime jurisdiction boundaries in accordance with the interests of both countries, the Turkish National Defense Ministry said Wednesday.
"We once again emphasize that we are ready to sign an Agreement on the Delimitation of Maritime Jurisdiction Areas with Egypt in line with mutual interests," the ministry said in a statement.
The proposed arrangement could provide Egypt with a broader maritime jurisdiction area than it might secure under a potential deal with Greece, according to the ministry.
"It is assessed that if Egypt signs such an agreement with our country, it would gain more than 15,000 square kilometers (5,792 square miles) of additional maritime jurisdiction compared to a potential agreement it could conclude with Greece."
The ministry reaffirmed that Türkiye would defend its legitimate rights and interests in the Eastern Mediterranean under international law while supporting peace, security and stability across the region.
It also welcomed Libya’s approval the previous week of a memorandum of understanding on maritime jurisdiction boundaries that Libya and Türkiye signed in 2019.
