Spain Rail Disaster Death Toll Reaches Sixty-Nine as Safety Concerns Grow

Date:

(MENAFN) The number of fatalities in Spain’s high-speed rail disaster climbed to 69 on Thursday, intensifying scrutiny of how safety measures failed to prevent one train from crashing into another that had stopped ahead.

Emiliano Garcia-Page, president of Castile-La Mancha, confirmed the latest death following Wednesday’s collision near Urda, in Toledo province.

Of the 110 people taken to hospital, 60 had been discharged while another 50 remained under medical care, Garcia-Page said. He added that four of the 15 patients in critical condition were showing signs of improvement, providing some grounds for cautious optimism.

Recovery teams continued clearing the wreckage and working to identify victims after additional human remains were found overnight. Garcia-Page said officials did not anticipate discovering further bodies beneath the train carriages.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez vowed to determine the circumstances behind the crash and take measures to prevent a similar tragedy.

“The entire central government is working day and night to respond to victims’ families, clarify every last detail of this tragedy and strengthen safety so this does not happen again,” he said during a joint news conference with Garcia-Page.
