Saudi Arabia Issues Warning in Najran Amid Missile Threats
(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defense issued an early warning alert in the southern city of Najran on Thursday before announcing that the threat had passed, without disclosing the nature of the potential danger.
The agency said the alert was intended to warn residents of a possible threat but provided no further information about the circumstances that prompted the warning.
The development followed the interception of a ballistic missile launched by Yemen’s Houthi group toward Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, according to the Saudi-led coalition.
On Wednesday, the coalition reported intercepting and destroying another Houthi ballistic missile aimed at Taif, a city in western Saudi Arabia.
In a separate incident late Tuesday, debris from two intercepted Houthi ballistic missiles damaged a building, a construction site and a vehicle in Riyadh, the capital, according to Civil Defense. The agency reported no casualties.
The incidents come as tensions continue to rise between the Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition, which backs Yemen’s internationally recognized government.
Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition against the Houthis since March 2015, following the group’s seizure of Sanaa, Yemen’s capital, and other parts of the country in 2014.
